NEKUIA is a choreographic solo conceived as a research space around the mask as face, marginalized gestures and the dynamics of identity.

NEKUIA explores the body as a traversed territory. A place of opaque memories and blinding lights; of ashes and breaths that whistle hot and cold. A place of “mushroomings,” of affects, of paradoxes. A place of tiny tendernesses and of Capitals that Name for Real. A place of double faces and multiple facets; of recto-verso, of splits, of back-and-forth; of figures of speech and ways of life.

At the intersection of dance, performance, and visual arts, the work questions how the body preserves and transforms what has not found its place in dominant narratives. In reference to the notion of nekuia as a ritual of invoking the absent, the project approaches gesture as a visible surface through which subterranean beliefs and ritual practices circulate.
